Primary thyroid extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type in a patient with breast cancer: a case report and review of literature

چکیده
Background: Breast cancer coexisting with primary thyroid lymphoma is a very rare combination of multiple primary malignant neoplasms. We present an unusual case of primary thyroid extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type (MALT lymphoma) occurring in a patient with breast cancer. Case presentation: A 76-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with bilateral thyroid nodules, which were detected two years and eight months ago. In May 2006, she underwent modified radical mastectomy for invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast. The patient was treated with total left thyroid lobectomy, isthmusectomy and subtotal right lobectomy. Histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) examination of surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of primary thyroid MALT lymphoma. She received chemotherapy and levothyroxine substitution therapy postoperatively. At the time of last follow-up (seven years and ten months after thyroid surgery), she was found to have a good prognosis (there was no recurrence). Conclusion: Clinical awareness of primary thyroid lymphoma in patients with malignant thyroid nodules should be increased. Surgery should be recommended for suspected malignant thyroid nodules in patients with a history of breast cancer. Post-operative histopathological and IHC examination of surgical specimen confirms the diagnosis. Early treatment is associated with a good prognosis.

A Case of Synchronous Lung Adenocarcinoma and Extranodal Marginal Zone B-Cell Lymphoma of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) Type
Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type (extranodal MZL) is a distinct subgroup of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Pulmonary extranodal MZL is a rare entity and accounts for less than 0.5% of primary pulmonary malignancies. Only a few cases of simultaneous occurrence of lung cancer and pulmonary extranodal MZL have been reported. A 60-year-old woman was referr...

Mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a lymphoid neoplasm arising in extranodal sites with histologic features similar to those of nodal marginal zone lymphoma. Among the sites where a primary MALT lymphoma arises, the GI tract is the most common whereas the breast represents only 4%. Bilateral involvement of the breasts by a primary MALT lymphoma is exceptional with only 10 case...

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is an extranodal indolent lymphoma with histopatholigic features similar to those of marginal zone B-cell lymphomas. Primary breast MALT lymphomas were first described by Lamovec and Jancar as a low-grade B-cell lymphoma in 1987. Herein, a case is presented of a patient with primary MALT lymphoma of the breast. Issues in diagnosis and breast-con...

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare subtype of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) located in the craniospinal axis (affecting CNS, meninges and eye) without evidence of a systemic primary tumor. CNS lymphomas are typically high grade, large cell lymphomas; low grade CNS lymphomas are rare. We encountered a case of 48-year old patient with recurrent episodes of seizures,...

Primary hepatic lymphoma is a rare disorder representing less than 1% of all extranodal lymphomas. Histological examination of a primary hepatic lymphoma usually reveals a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma; there have been few reports of primary hepatic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas. A 67-year-old man was being treated for a duodenal ulcer; while receiving therapy for the ulcer...
